Ukrainian Bodybuilder Wins Junior IBFA Universe Title

Kyiv, July 17, 2013. Ukrainian bodybuilder Serhiy Karpa became the winner in the category of junior competitors (under 23) in the eighth IBFA Universe competition. The event took place in the Italian city of Sapri on July 7, 2013. Italian athlete Valerio Comunale became second in this category, while Polish Michael Kusyk was third.

Ukrainian winner Serhiy Karpa, a student at the Lviv University of the State Emergency Service, shared with ukrinform that he had been preparing for the competition very thoroughly. Getting ready for the event in Sapri, Karpa dieted for 70 days. For this period he completely eliminated carbs from his diet. He also exercised his legs to shape them up for the bodybuilding event.

The competition in Italy featured bodybuilders from Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Ukraine. The athletes also competed in the following categories: Mr. and Ms. Italy, as well as Mr. & Ms. Europe. The Europe-wide competition was taking place for the 17th time, while Italy featured this type of event for the 43rd time. In 2013, Luigi De Pisapia became Mr. Italy.

Next up for the new IBFA Mr. Universe among under 32 juniors is the GPF/GPA European Powerlifting, Bench Press and Multi-Reps Bench Press Open Cup 2013, taking place on July 26-28 in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Bodybuilding has become a popular sport in Ukraine. Just in June of 2013 eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv hosted the 2013 European Fitness and Bodybuilding Open Championship.

In December 2012, Ukrainian bodybuilder Andriy Khomytskyi, 23, won two prizes at the IFBB World Juniors and Masters Championships, which took place in Budapest, Hungary. Khomytskyi took gold in Junior Men’s Athletic Physique open class and silver in Junior Men’s Classic Bodybuilding open class. Additionally, Ukraine took the second spot in the best teams rating at the Championships.

In November 2012, three Ukrainian bodybuilders won the titles of the best in male and female fitness, as well as body fitness during the 2012 World Classic Bodybuilding Championships and the IFBB World Cup. Ukrainian team also won two bronze medals – in athletic fitness and body fitness.

In the 2011 IFBB World Juniors and Masters Championships Ukraine took one gold and three bronze awards. Also in 2011, Ukrainian athlete Tetiana Mikheichyk won Arnold Classic, European Championships and World Cup 2011.

The bodybuilding federation began functioning in Ukraine back in 1972, the year when the first bodybuilding championship took place in the country. The first Ukrainian world champion in bodybuilding was Serhiy Otrokh, under 65 kg.
